There are three ways to vote in the Democratic Primary election this year:
Vote early, via mail
Vote early in person, from June 13 to June 21
Vote in person on Election Day, June 23
-
You are eligible to vote in the 2026 primary election if you are at least 18 years old and a US citizen, and if you registered to vote by June 13.
New York has what’s called a “closed primary.” This means that to vote in the Democratic Primary, you must be registered as a Democrat. If you registered to vote with a party other than Democrat, you will not be able to vote in this election.

Absentee ballots are primarily for New Yorkers who will be away during in-person voting on Election Day or during the early voting period, or who are not able to make it to the polls because of illness, disability, or any other reason.
You can apply for an absentee ballot online by June 13. You can also apply for an absentee ballot in person at the Erie County Board of Elections Office, located at 134 West Eagle Street, Buffalo, NY 14202. You have until Monday, June 22 (the day before Election Day) to apply for an absentee ballot in person—meaning that you go to the Board of Elections, ask for your absentee ballot, and can fill it out right there. Essentially, it’s like another way to vote early, if you wish to do so.
You must either postmark your absentee ballot or drop it off at the Erie County Board of Elections Office no later than Tuesday, June 23.
❗️ Remember to sign both your ballot and the back of the envelope, or your ballot will be invalidated.

District 149 covers a diverse geographic area, from Lake View up to Riverside. Use this tool to look up your Assembly Member. If Jonathan Rivera is your Assembly Member, you live in District 149!
If you have just moved to the district and need to update your voter registration, you can do so until June 8.
Any way you vote is acceptable and encouraged! We recommend taking five minutes to make sure you know how to vote, and to come up with a voting plan beforehand. People who make a plan are way more likely to exercise their right to vote, and this right is important.
